State Meeting @ Carroll Municipal Golf Course

The years' first Iowa GCSA meeting was held this past Monday, May 12th at Carroll Municipal Golf Course. The meeting was held in conjunction with an educational session consisting of the new policy changes with the SDS sheets being the new standard next summer instead of the previous MSDS sheets.

The meeting kicked off with an update about the new SDS forms for all pesticides. These new sheets will be made mandatory by summer of 2015, but a part of this new law, one needs to have trained his staff about the changes by December 1, 2013 or as they start again this spring. Both Ryan Adams from Iowa State University and Jeff Wendel ran through all the changes and provided a few handouts highlighting the main differences between the old and new system.

Ryan Adams also spoke briefly about some of his travels already this spring as a part of his extension duties. He has seen quite a bit of damage to both poa and ryegrass from this past winter. He also saw quite a bit of cross country skiing damage from different public golf courses throughout the state. Ryan also expressed that if anyone had issues on their course to feel free to give him a call or email to discuss the issue or you could schedule Ryan to visit your golf course.

Introduction of the 2014 State Board kicked off the state meeting. During the state meeting concern was expressed about the downfall in advertising in the Reporter versus previous years. Some of these business' are paying monthly this year instead of one lump sum, but as always if you know any vendors out there that would be interested in advertising feel free to contact the ITI office about that business.

Chauncey Barry also introduced a collaboration with sports professionals, educators, municipalities, & lawn care professionals along with golf course superintendents to form an Iowa Water Coalition. This coalition is to develop plans, courses can use to help conserve water along with address water quality issues they may have or influence. A meeting will be taking place with leading professionals in each of these industries to start to develop this plan. This is all being done in a proactive approach to prevent legislature from placing water restrictions on our industry as many states have already done so to golf course professionals.

We would like to thank Dan Smith on hosting the Iowa GCSA state meeting this past Monday. Although the course was too wet to play after 2.5"+ overnight, the course looked to be in great shape. Pictured below is Dan Smith with Josh Thompson, Iowa GCSA President.

They will be smoking some meat (ribs, meatballs, etc.).

We would also like to Congratulate Doug Lahey after 29 years of service to the Sioux City Country Club. Troy Martinson CGCS, presented his employee with a nice plaque for all of his hard work and dedication to the club. We all hope you enjoy your retirement Doug.
